The Case for Fewer, Better Things: Why Calinea Doesn't Sell Top Sheets

Ask us why our bedding sets don't include a top sheet, and the honest answer is: we don't think you need one. It's a small decision, but it says a lot about how Calinea approaches a bed.

The case against the top sheet

A top sheet solves a problem that better bedding doesn't have — it exists mostly to protect a duvet or comforter from direct contact with the body, so it can be washed less often. A duvet cover already does that job. Once you have one, a top sheet becomes an extra layer to tuck, straighten, and wash, without adding much comfort in return.

A more considered bed, not a stripped-down one

Removing the top sheet isn't about minimalism for its own sake. It's about deciding what actually earns a place in the bed: a fitted sheet against the mattress, a duvet cover that can be washed as easily as any sheet, and pillowcases — each doing real work, nothing redundant.

Many of our customers find this is actually less to manage, not more: fewer pieces to fold, fewer things that need ironing or careful layering to look intentional.

Where the fabric matters more because of it

With one less layer between you and the duvet cover, the quality of that fabric matters more, not less. It's part of why we work exclusively with natural fibers — muslin, Turkish cotton, linen blends, and lyocell — chosen for how they feel directly against skin, not just how they look folded on a shelf.

If you still want one

A simplified bed isn't a rule, it's a starting point. If you prefer a top sheet, a lightweight muslin flat sheet or a breathable percale sheet from any set pairs easily with our duvet covers — the option is always there, we just don't make it the default.
