How to choose

Choose by how you sleep and how the bed is used. If you run warm, or your summer nights stay above 70, a muslin cotton coverlet on its own is often the entire answer: several washed layers of gauze breathe better than a duvet at any fill weight. If you want texture and a little more heft, and the bed is as much furniture as it is a place to sleep, the handwoven pieces hold their shape and drape with more presence.

Size up rather than down. A Queen covers a Queen mattress with modest overhang; if you want it falling past the box spring, or you share with someone who pulls, take the next size. And if what you actually need is winter warmth, do not buy a coverlet alone — pair it with a duvet and use it as the top layer.

Coverlet, quilt, or duvet?

A duvet is a cover plus an insert, and the warmth comes from the fill; it is the heaviest and hottest of the three. A quilt is three layers — top, thin batting, backing — stitched through, giving modest warmth and the puckered surface people associate with the word. A coverlet is closer to a woven bedspread: little or no batting, made for coverage, texture, and light warmth rather than insulation.

In practice the categories blur, and ours sit between the last two — substantial enough to use alone in warm months, light enough to layer under or over anything. The more useful question is not which word applies, but how much warmth you want and whether you would rather see stitching or weave on the surface of the bed.

Care

Wash on a gentle cycle in cool or warm water, alone or with other bedding, and give the machine room — a Queen crammed into a small drum comes out creased and strained at the seams. Tumble dry low and remove while slightly damp; muslin in particular finishes best spread on the bed. Expect gauze to crinkle a little more with every wash, which is the intended look. Skip bleach and softener entirely, and spot-treat small marks rather than laundering the whole piece.

Common questions

Can I use one alone in summer?Yes, and that is the most common use. Muslin over a flat sheet stays comfortable well into the eighties for most sleepers, and it washes and dries quickly enough to live on the bed all season.

Will it fit a thick mattress?These are cut for coverage rather than deep drop. On a mattress over about twelve inches, or one with a topper added, order a size up if you want the edges to hang below the mattress line.

Is a coverlet warm enough in winter?On its own, not in most homes. Layered over a duvet or beneath a heavier blanket it adds real warmth without bulk, and it keeps the duvet cleaner at the foot of the bed.

Do handwoven pieces vary?Yes, and they should. Slight differences in weave density and small variations between panels come from the loom rather than from a fault. They settle visually after the first wash and use.
