The Skincare-Safe Way to Keep White Towels and Robes From Discoloring

A new towel or robe that starts discoloring after a few weeks isn't a sign of poor quality — it's usually a reaction between the fabric and something in your skincare routine. Here's what's actually happening, and how to prevent it.

Fine Weave Towel — Cloud White - Calinea

Why this happens

Calinea towels and robes are made without harsh synthetic treatments — no chemical brighteners or bleach-resistant coatings. That's part of why they feel and age the way natural cotton should. The trade-off is that the fabric is more sensitive to certain active ingredients, especially ones already designed to bleach or oxidize.

The most common culprits: benzoyl peroxide and hydrogen peroxide (found in many acne treatments and some skin serums), along with bleach-based cleaning products. Even a small amount transferred from a towel-dried face or a robe sleeve can leave faint orange or yellow spots over time.

How to prevent it

  • Use white towels and robes if your routine includes these ingredients. Discoloration is far more visible on darker or colored fabric — white hides it, or at least makes any change less noticeable.
  • Let treatments fully absorb and dry before toweling off or wrapping up, rather than immediately after application.
  • Keep a separate hand towel near the sink for post-skincare routines, rather than your bath towel.

Wash before first use

We recommend washing any new towel or robe before its first use — it improves softness and absorbency right away, since the fabric hasn't yet been through a wash cycle that fully opens up the weave.

General care after that

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, skip fabric softener (it coats the fibers and reduces absorbency), and tumble dry low or air dry. Avoid bleach entirely, even on white pieces — it causes the same kind of damage as the skincare ingredients above.
