Waffle cotton carries the shade well, since the recessed squares hold it slightly deeper than the ridges do.

The weave
The cloth is essentially a grid of small pockets. Each one holds air, meets skin, and takes on water across texture instead of depth, so the robe absorbs well while staying thin enough to fold into a drawer or a suitcase. No heavy pile means it dries between uses and does not carry the mildew smell a thick robe develops. Washing loosens the fibers and improves the feel steadily.
