The color
The tonal checker keeps that shade from going flat, since two values shift against each other as you cross the room.
What the eye notices last, the foot notices first — a plush, absorbent field bounded by a raised textured border that reads as a slight step up at the perimeter.
The weave
Drying speed is a question of exposed surface. Seal one side with rubber and only the top can breathe, which is why backed mats stay clammy underneath and begin to smell. Leave both faces open, as woven cotton does, and moisture leaves twice as readily. Nothing hardens or flakes over time either. What openness costs you is grip, so use a pad on slick floors.

Styling
Put it in a beach house bath: shiplap walls, a weathered teak stool holding a folded towel, sea-worn glass on the sill. Grey stops the room becoming all bleached wood and white paint. It suits an outdoor-shower changing room too, where things get wet often and must dry between uses. Pair with faded indigo linens and let the salt light do the rest.

How fast does it dry out?Draped over a towel bar, typically a few hours, because air circulates through the weave from both directions. Left flat against a cold floor, it takes considerably longer.
Will it work over a heated floor?Yes, and better than a rubber-backed mat, which traps warmth and moisture at the surface. Cotton lets heat pass upward, so the floor keeps working and the mat dries sooner.
Will it slide on a wet floor?On wet-polished tile it can move, since nothing on the reverse grips. A low-profile pad solves it. Placement matters too: a mat you step down onto stays put more readily.
