The color is drawn from sun-bleached dune grass rather than clay, so it stays soft rather than orange.

Standing on it wet, you feel cotton take the water in instead of moving it around.

What you gain by leaving the underside open is airflow: both faces meet the room, water leaves in half the time, and nothing sits damp against tile. You also gain a normal laundry life, warm wash and low tumble, because no rubber can harden and no PVC can split. What you give up is built-in traction, which a thin pad restores.
