PLUSH

The making

Made slowly, in small batches.

The color

Against a white basin it reads as a shadow rather than a beige; beside unfinished oak or limewash it settles into the wall instead of standing away from it.

The pile carries a fine self-toned jacquard, so even before the border reaches your eye the surface is breaking the light into grain rather than lying flat.

Then the border arrives: a wide band of small woven diamonds in terracotta and slate blue on an undyed ground, closed off by a plain flat hem.

Those two accents are the only saturated thing on the whole towel, and they are exactly what keeps Dune from being one more neutral.

The weave

Combed cotton is cotton that has been drawn through a comb before spinning, so the short fibers are pulled out and only the long ones are twisted into yarn. Fewer loose ends means less lint in the first months, a smoother hand, and a loop that keeps its shape through years of washing. Montecito's pile is packed close: the towel has real weight when you lift it, and it takes a little longer on the rail than an open weave would. That is the trade you make for a surface this absorbent. It is the towel for stepping out of a long bath, not the one for a gym bag.

  • Combed long-staple cotton — less lint, smoother hand, longer life
  • Dense plush pile — substantial in the hand, deeply absorbent

The band is woven in, not printed on and not stitched over. Rows of small diamonds sit on an undyed ground in two colors — a warm terracotta and a muted slate blue — each motif built up from tiny squares the way a kilim figure is built from knots. Because the pattern is structural it cannot crack, peel or wash off; it ages at precisely the same rate as the cloth around it. Past the band the towel finishes in a plain flat hem, which keeps the edge from bulking where it folds over the rail.

Styling

Dune is built for a bathroom that leans warm — travertine, terracotta tile, aged brass, wood left unfinished. The two accents in the border do the job a single piece of glazed pottery would do: enough color to register from the doorway, not enough to commit the room to a scheme. It sits easily next to undyed linen, and it is forgiving in a rental bathroom where somebody else chose the tile.

Frequently asked

Is the border the same on both sides?Yes. It is woven as a jacquard, so the motif reads on both faces with the two colors reversed. The towel has no wrong side to hide.

Does a plush towel take longer to dry?It does, and that is the point of it. Density is what makes the cloth absorbent — a deeper pile holds more water and releases it over a longer hang. Skip fabric softener: it coats the fiber and is the quickest way to lose the absorbency you paid for.

What should I buy for a full bathroom? Two bath towels and two hand towels cover one person with a spare always in rotation. A guest bath does fine with one of each. Buying the set of four or six costs less than adding pieces one at a time.
