The stripe
The charcoal runs in groups rather than an even rhythm — a wide herringbone band, then three fine lines, then a gap of plain cream — which is what keeps it from reading as a tea towel. The herringbone is a change of weave direction, not a change of yarn, so it catches the light differently from the flat stripes beside it and the band has depth to it up close. Both ends finish in hand-knotted fringe, twisted from the warp threads themselves rather than sewn on afterwards.
Where it works
In a small bathroom it is the practical answer to wanting a bath sheet without the bulk — it folds to a fraction of the space on a shelf and does not overwhelm a narrow rail. Outside the bathroom it is the one towel that travels: a beach or pool towel that shakes sand off instead of holding it, a throw over a bench or the end of a bed, a wrap on a cool evening. It is not the towel for someone who wants to be enveloped in thick pile after a long bath — that is what the Montecito is for. This one is for people who want to be dry and gone.

A plush terry sheet at this size is a heavy, slow-drying thing to lift off the rail; this one wraps all the way round and is dry again by the time you next want it.
It is flat-woven from soft Aegean cotton rather than looped into a pile, which is why it packs down to almost nothing and why it works as well over a beach chair or a bench as it does in the bathroom.
The design is quiet and graphic: charcoal stripes in varying weights on an undyed cream ground, a herringbone band at either end, and hand-knotted fringe.
Nothing is printed — the stripes are woven through the cloth.
The weave
A terry towel dries you with volume: thousands of loops holding water in the pile. A flat weave like this one works differently — the cloth is thin enough that water passes into it and straight back out into the air, so it absorbs quickly and releases quickly. That is why a peshtemal feels almost dry in the hand a few hours after use while a plush towel is still damp on the rail. It also means the cloth softens rather than flattens with washing: there is no pile to crush, so the Aveline gets better with age instead of tired.
